4th Clark BursaryBreath Holdby Susannah SilverView excerpts from Breath Hold | ProposalBreath-hold is a two screen video installation about waiting for a moment in time: the cusp between before and after. Holding our breath, we wait for a birth, and sometimes a death. And when it happens, we go over the brink, forward in time. Under water, unchoreographed bodies acquire grace, turning over and over, weightless, suspended. Gestures slow as if freezing. Time is measured in small segments - an instinctive reflex to breathe that comes every 20 seconds; the time taken to reach the pool bottom mirrored by the time needed to come to the surface. Sound clicks to capture time’s cusp every six seconds. Slow it down, play it back, shuttle between before and after whilst real time goes on its course. Susannah's application to the Clark Bursary was to further develop Breath Hold for installation. She did this through spening time in residence at PVA Medialab in Bridport who partnered the 4th Clark Bursary. Breath Hold was created as part of the 4th Clark Bursary, supported by J A Clark Charitable Trust, Watershed, PVA Medialab, University of the West of England, and Arts Council England South West.
