In this post-screening Q&A session, hosted by filmmaker Mark Kidel, composer and musician John Parish talks about the score he created for the film. The conversation includes how John got involved in the film, the very open brief from the director - not Chinese sounding music, do what you do - and John's approach to creating the score.

She, A Chinese is the award winning debut feature from filmmaker and novelist Xiaolu Guo (How Is Your Fish Today, A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary For Lovers) and tells the story of Mei, an enigmatic woman raised in a backwater Chinese village. Her search for a different life takes her to the city and eventually to England. Exploring themes of alienation and personal identity that Xiaolu’s readers will recognise from her books, this is an intense and emotional story told with real style and sincerity.

John Parish is a musician, composer and producer best known for his work with singer and songwriter PJ Harvey, though he has also worked with Eels, Tracy Chapman, Kill It Kid and Giant Sand, amongst others. John has composed half a dozen film scores to date and is currently working on his next.

Mark Kidel is a film-maker and writer specialising in the arts and music, working in the UK and France. He has been making films since the early 1970s.
