It’s over two weeks since the Bristol citizen journalism crew left Weymouth but their blog is still being added to (see below) and right now it’s been viewed 5555 times! Eleven young people have provided some great perspectives on Weymouth’s temporary Olympic life (being continued until the end of the Paralympics) with observations and reviews on cultural events and interviews with visitors, residents and businesses, and even a rival Olympic Sailing team from Denmark! We have now chosen six very enthusiastic young people from the Bristol area to join six Weymouth natives at a four day long media camp in the only location in England outside London to host London 2012 Olympic Games events. From 27th July to 30th July we believe they will be pleasantly overwhelmed by the choice of topics to report on! The media camp is part of the Maritime Mix programme.
We’ve timed the camp to coincide with the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games in Weymouth, and in addition to the competition sailing there’s a rich mix of cultural activity going on too. See our post over on the RELAYS citizen journalism blog for more details.

Yes, it’s getting closer, and today the Olympic motto has been revealed – ‘Inspire a generation’. Well here at Watershed we believe we’ve already been doing that with our RELAYS projects over the last 4 years, and now the Games are only 3 months away planning for our RELAYS summer events is intensifying. We’re putting together a great programme of screenings, talks and events for July (details to follow soon), with a ‘sport meets culture’ theme that will also include some live sporting action – in the bar!
Other activities we’re working on are the Encounters 0117 Film Challenge in May (make a film in 117 hours, in Bristol – while the Olympic Torch is in town! This year open to under 18s); the Olympic themed Media Literacy Workshops for schools in June, and helping organise media camps in Weymouth where young people can learn how to report on both the Olympic and Paralympic sailing and Cultural Olympiad events using the tools of citizen journalism – more on this soon.
In the meantime, to help pass the 100 days Metro newspaper have produced 100 facts about the Olympics that you may find diverting! The first 25 are here, the remainder will be added over the next few days.

We’ve just opened the booking for our well established Media Literacy Workshops – they don’t take place until June but with all the activities we’ve got planned for 2012 this year’s going to be busy for RELAYS at Watershed so we need to get confirmation by March 6th. So, if your Year 9 English, Media or PE students are enthusiastic about the Games, bringing them to our Olympic-themed Media Literacy workshop will help them learn more about how the Olympics has been represented over the last century – on film, on TV, in art and graphics.
If, however, they’re already bored by the very idea of sport, it’s more than likely they’ll find some intriguing, entertaining and challenging ideas in the wide range of movie clips they’ll watch from previous Olympic Games that include personal rivalries, political showmanship, bizarre costumes and things that go wrong at opening ceremonies – as well as some iconic sporting moments.
Watershed’s day-long Media Literacy Workshops – part of our programme of RELAYS activities – take place late in the summer term when David Goldblatt, writer and broadcaster, with input from the BBC, will invite students to unwrap some of the stories from what has been described as the greatest show on earth.
See what’s happened at previous year’s media literacy workshops.

From the BBC Bristol website, 7th December.
Bristol has been chosen as a training venue for Kenyan Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
A delegation previously visited the city and looked at sporting facilities at the University of the West of England and Filton College.
Their visit also included a sightseeing trip of the city before a ceremony at the Council House where contracts were signed.
Both locations will be used in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics.
This announcement comes one year after Kenyan Olympic Kipchoge “Kip” Keino opened the £1.3m Kip Keino Athletic Stadium at Filton College.
The 70-year-old is the chairman of the Kenyan Olympic Committee.
He described the facilities in Bristol as “wonderful”.
“The people of Bristol have given us a very friendly welcome. We feel we are at home. It’s a wonderful thing for sports development in this country,” he added.
Ths could provide a great opportunity for our young citizen journalists to visit and report on the Kenyan team’s experiences in the UK.
