Town of Runners

Monday, July 16th, 2012

town-of-runners

The town of Bekoji is in the Ethiopian Highlands and through a combination of elements produces some extraordinary runners. Almost everyone in the town runs, gently but persuasively encouraged and supported by the local athletics coach. Over the years the film was made we see this remote area beginning to link with the wider world as a new road, paid for with money from China, is constructed through the town. (more…)

Kenyan Olympic Team at Watershed

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

kenya-team4

Watershed is pleased to have been chosen as the social hub for the visiting Kenyan Olympic Team, who are based at Bristol University until they leave for the London 2012 Olympic athletes’ village in the middle of July.

There are lots of Kenyan flags and ribbons around the Watershed cafe bar now and some special East African themed items on our menu to welcome our visitors and make them feel at least a little bit at home. We’re hoping they’ll enjoy some of our RELAYS events too! They’ve been invited to the special screening of the Town of Runners on 14 July – a film about the exceptional runners from one town in Kenya’s neighbouring country, Ethiopia – also their athletic rivals! Director Jerry Rothwell will be taking part in a question and answer session after the film with Afrika Eye’s Simon Bright and representatives from the African Voices Forum.

img_4079

If you come to Watershed on Friday 25th November at 7.00 pm, you can find out everything you’ll need to know about How to Watch the Olympics at the launch of David’s Goldblatt’s new book of the same name. David and co-author Jonny Acton have provided a clear, but humorous account of all the Olympic sports – including photographs and some intriguing diagrams.

David and Jonny will be at the event to give some background to the book and show a selection of some of their favourite Olympic film clips – see Watershed’s website for more details of the event and how to buy tickets.

“Thank you for a really enjoyable and valuable experience yesterday….we had a fabulous day! ”

“Thank you for an excellent day at the Watershed”

These quotes are from teachers who brought their students to this year’s Media Literacy workshops at Watershed.  The theme was ‘Why study the Olympics?” (see below for more information) and Opening Ceremonies through 20th Century Olympic Games provided the focus for the morning screening session, which included clips of Leni Riefenstahl’s innovative 1936 Berlin Olympics film, Los Angeles 1984, and the astonishing 2008 Games in Beijing.

Photos from the workshops can be seen in the gallery.

Olympic Village visit

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

p1030700

At the end of August the RELAYS team from across the south west met in London for the annual Away Day.  This year a site visit to the Olympic Village had been arranged after meeting at the LOCOG offices (The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games).  These are on the top floor of the Barclays building in Canary Wharf and provide amazing views (through low cloud and rain!) across to the the Olympic village site where we were taken the following day. A huge site with a range of architecture – some great, some not so thrilling!

You can see more photos from our ‘outing’ in the Gallery.
