Yesterday evening’s screening of Hugh Hartford’s film Ping Pong at Watershed was so popular we moved it into the bigger cinema! A very enthusiastic audience – of all ages from 8 to over 80 – loved the film that was followed by a lively question and answer session with the director, hosted by David Goldblatt. (more…)

To celebrate the arrival of the Olympic Torch this May in Bristol, filmmakers are invited to create quality short films in just 117 hours based in and focused on Sports, Games and Play in the city.
This high-energy event will encourage visual storytelling and will promote Bristol as a filming and sporting location, presented by Bristol City Council, Bristol Film Office, Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival and M Shed, inspired by London 2012 as part of the Cultural Olympiad in partnership with Relays, Legacy Trust and Watershed. We’re delighted to learn that ‘Tick Tock’, one of the 3 films made in our Short Cuts project last year is to be shown nationally across all 20 of the BBC Big Screens from tomorrow, Saturday 23rd July.
The films will be part of the regular new content showcase on the Big Screens at midday Saturdays, 1230 Fridays and 1800 Wednesdays until the end of August
The two other films, ‘Frank and Chris’ and ‘Counterpunch’, will be screened on our neighbouring Bristol Big Screen.
Counterpunch has also been selected for the Co-operative young people’s Film Festival 2011 in October.

These quotes are from teachers who brought their students to this year’s Media Literacy workshops at Watershed. The theme was ‘Why study the Olympics?” (see below for more information) and Opening Ceremonies through 20th Century Olympic Games provided the focus for the morning screening session, which included clips of Leni Riefenstahl’s innovative 1936 Berlin Olympics film, Los Angeles 1984, and the astonishing 2008 Games in Beijing.

We’re just finalising details for this year’s Media Literacy workshops for secondary schools (follow Media Literacy tag on the right to see information on previous years’ workshops) and thought we’d tell you a little bit about our plans and the theme “Why study the Olympics?”!! Here’s an introduction to the topic for teachers by the workshop leader David Goldblatt:
“The Summer Olympics are an extraordinary event. What began as an obscure, eccentric Hellenic revival and sporting gymkhana has become one of the world’s most important and most watched public spectacles. Now over a century old, they have survived every twist and turn of global history and grown ever larger. Up to six years in the making, the scale of a modern Olympic games is immense: 20,000, athletes, from over 200 countries, compete in 23 sports over three weeks, and most of the planet will be watching some of it. Over the last few weeks we’ve been working on a pilot RELAYS project here at Watershed (see post below) with our partner school Fairfield High and our sports broadcasting friend David Goldblatt. You can learn more about the project from our blog and also find out how the young journalists got on with live blogging and iPadio reporting at the Bristol City v Doncaster football match on Saturday 2nd April. Bristol City Football Club had generously provided free access to the Press stand and post match press conference for some of our students. This was our first attempt at using smart phones for journalism and although we lost a few blog posts, didn’t quite manage to get great photos, couldn’t always connect to iPadio, the young team nevertheless did achieve a massive amount and we all had a really good afternoon! One of our students said ‘I really liked the press conference it made me feel pro’! (more…)

We’re delighted to announce that the three films made for our Short Cuts project have been signed off by First Light which means we can now share them with everyone.
The three films are ‘Tick Tock’ made by Fast Forward with Young Bristol, ‘Frank and Chris’ made by The Foyer with Connexions West, and ‘Counterpunch’ made by Digital Fish at Knowle West Media Centre.

Some of the films have already been shown at a BAFTA youth mentoring showcase on 17th March and we hope the films will now be submitted for festivals both by First Light and by the young filmmakers’ mentors. News about these developments will be posted here.

Today was the first session of our new RELAYS project with Fairfield High School’s BTEC media students to support them in honing their technology and social networking skills to the point where they will be ready to report back, live, from a football match in Bristol in April. They’re setting up blogs and ‘phlogs’ where they can phone in their reports and post photos and video, and learning how technology is changing the way we receive news, and how they can create news themselves. We’ve set up our own blog for this project which you can find here

Here’s a chance to view what over a hundred Bristol school pupils experienced when they came to Watershed in May for the Media Literacy Workshops. With teachers in mind we recorded one of the morning sessions led by David Goldblatt so schools who haven’t attended before but are interested in coming to future workshops, can get an insight into the process.

Building on the established and successful format of previous Media Literacy Workshops, writer, broadcaster and teacher David Goldblatt, led the workshops with a World Cup theme to explore the use of language, cliche and meaning in sports’ media.
Five Bristol schools each came to Watershed for a day bringing 134 year 9 and 10 students from Bridge Learning Campus, Brislington Enterprise College, Bedminster Down, Fairfield and St Mary Redcliffe schools.
