This urgent and devastating portrait of life in Palestine follows Brooklyn woman Soraya (Suheir Hammad), who travels to the West Bank and Israel to recover her roots – not to mention her Palestinian grandfather’s house and bank account, lost in the war. Soraya and the two men she befriends, Emad (Salah Bakri) and Marwan (Riyad Ideis), plan on a big heist to settle the historical debt (315 Palestinian pounds plus more than 60 years’ interest) and must negotiate physical barrier (walls, fences, checkpoints, holding cells) and ritual humilations to achieve their goal. The first feature film from Palestine by a female director, this is an intimate and rousing piece of political filmmaking that must be experienced.
Followed by a Skype Q&A with director Annemarie Jacir.
“Brilliant, emotional… intense and fresh… One of the best films I’ve seen in years” Michael Moore
