St Vincent
classified 12APlease note: This was screened in Dec 2014
A cantankerous, cash-strapped, loose-living retiree (Bill Murray, who else?) becomes a spectacularly unlikely role model to his twelve-year-old neighbour in this refreshingly unorthodox comedy. Murray is Vincent, a Vietnam War vet from Brooklyn who splits his time between bars, the horse track, and the strip club where his pregnant Russian stripper girlfriend (Naomi Watts having a real hoot with a ridiculously thick accent and killer heels) works. He's less than pleased to see a single mum (Melissa McCarthy) move in next door, but spots an opportunity to "babysit" her son Oliver for twelve bucks an hour. She reluctantly agrees, and soon Oliver is getting a "real" education, one that involves learning about prostitutes and booze, how to bet at the race track and breaking a bully's nose. Meanwhile Oliver is hard at work on a school assignment challenging him to report on everyday saints... it doesn't take a genius to predict who he chooses. This is funny, moving stuff - all hail St Bill!
