The ultimate British cult classic: the folk musical, occult chiller and really quite mad seminal horror The Wicker Man sets the mould for a distinctly British take on the folk noir genre. Edward Woodward stars as the virginal policeman who arrives on a remote Scottish island to search for a missing girl, only to get sucked into a nightmare of sexual misadventure and pagan rites as he suspects the islanders of knowing much more about the girl (and missing others) than they are letting on. The climax alone is one of the most terrifying and iconic in modern cinema. As powerful and downright disturbing than ever The Wicker Man still burns, and its combination of hammer horror with pagan rituals, may-pole dancing and infectious folk music continues to influence.
