Writer/director Fred Schepisi's brilliant adaptation of Graham Swift's Booker Prize-winning novels is a rare chance to see some of Britain's finest acting talents together in the same place. It tells the story of Jack (Michael Caine, seen in flashback), a butcher who has recently died of cancer, leaving instructions that his ashes should be scattered off Margate Pier. Three of his oldest companions and drinking buddies - Ray, (Bob Hoskins) Lenny (David Hemmings) and Vic (Tom Courtenay), plus Jack's son Vince (Ray Winstone), meet at the pub to reminisce, bicker and booze their way to his final resting place. During the journey they share vivid and often conflicting memories of the past, and reflect on love, fate, and death. Can their friendship survive the secrets revealed along the way? A funny, honest film about friendship, deceit and loss, it's a rare gem.
Kerrie Noonan, Clinical Psychologist in palliative care, end of life researcher and founder of arts and health organisation The GroundSwell Project, will introduce the screening and lead a discussion on the film afterwards.
