Swallows and Amazons + Directors Q&A
classified PGPlease note: This was screened in Aug 2016
Set sail for a heartwarming experience for all the family with this inspiring, rambunctious and nostalgic tale of summer adventure, as Arthur Ransome's enduring 1930’s children's novel is brought to life in this beautifully realised adaptation of a quintessentially British classic.
Set over one idyllic summer the four Walker children and their sailing rivals, the Blacketts, run amok in their sailing boats against the stunning backdrop of the Lake District. Whilst the Walkers sail the agile Swallow, the Blacketts commandeer The Amazon, making camp on a nearby island. Theirs is a world of imagination - one with pirates and canons, boats being captured and enemies walking the plank. But as the real world finds itself on the brink of war, and a mysterious pair of Russian spies are found hot on the tail of their family friend Jim, our motley crew must learn quickly the skills of survival, the value of friendship and the importance of holding your nerve.
A celebration of the power of imagination, Bristol-based and BAFTA-winning director Philippa Lowthorpe (Call the Midwife, Jamaica Inn) as well as a superb cast including Kelly Macdonald, Jessica Hynes, Andrew Scott and Rafe Spall, combine brilliantly to do justice to this beloved story – one that will have adults melting into laughter, teenagers grinning with sheepish self-knowledge at the eternal lure of puckishness, and young ones swept up in the thrill.
Followed by a Q&A with director Philippa Lowthorpe.
