All About Almodóvar Sunday Brunches
Please note : this season finished in Sept 2016
To celebrate the release of his latest film Julieta (screening from Fri 26 Aug), master of the audacious and the unorthodox, of the permissive and the polemical, Pedro Almodóvar - one of cinema's most visionary directors - is the focus of our Sunday Brunch season for September.
One of a handful of directors whose name doubles as an adjective, Almodóvar has over the last 20 years expertly crafted a cinematic signature all of his own. One that encompasses a distinctive visual style, a favored cast, a city (Madrid) and an abiding appreciation for sexual antics and the high jinx they bring. Renown for their fearlessness in featuring gay men, strong and theatrical women, bright colors and an original mix of comedy and melodrama, his films portray a rapture at the beautiful surface of things, a sense of liminal and transgressive sexual identity, and a love of role-playing all wrapped up in the sublime escapism of cinema. And whilst he may protest the burden of audience expectations that meet any new project he undertakes, his films remain doggedly accessible and routinely popular.
From the tangled loyalties, desire and revenge in his raw and erotically charged drama Live Flesh (Sun 4 Sept); to the dazzlingly noirish tale of mystery, melodrama and a shared childhood secret in Bad Education (Sun 11 Sept); via his ravishing tale of romantic obsession, loneliness and friendship that marked out Talk To Her (Sun 18 Sept); to the Oscar® winning tapestry of femininity and moving classic of European filmmaking All About My Mother, September is a treat for both his legions of fans and those still yet to discover the charms of the venerable Spanish master.
