‘Creating the Spectacle!’ by Sue Austin

‘Creating the Spectacle!’ is a ground breaking series of performances by artist Sue Austin in her self-propelled underwater wheelchair.

The swimming pool is transformed into a sub-aquatic theatre as the dramatic performance is watched by underwater and poolside audiences. Conceived by Artistic Director Sue Austin and produced through Freewheeling, ‘Creating the Spectacle!’ aims to generate a widespread public debate about the nature and value of contemporary arts practice shaped by the experience of disability.

The Spectacle is completed by a celebratory procession and voyage out to sea.

Finally the audience re-gathers at ICCI 360 Arena in Weymouth to witness it flying free on its tropical adventure.

Two 90 second films are now available on ‘Creating the Spectacle!’ – the original on from the Push Me Collection and the second, on the Journey so far.

‘Creating the Spectacle!’ has been commissioned by the Unlimited Programme, part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

This project is part of the London 2012 Festival, is a 12 week nationwide celebration running from June 21st 2012 until the final day of the Paralympic Games on 9th September 2012.
