Bobby Baker is a woman, and an artist. She lives in London, England. In an acclaimed career spanning nearly four decades she has, amongst other things, danced with meringue ladies; made a life-sized version of her family out of cake; and driven around the streets of London strapped to the back of a truck yelling at passers by through a megaphone to ‘Pull Yourselves Together.’
Her touring exhibition Diary Drawings: Mental Illness and Me premiered at the Wellcome Collection in 2009, and the accompanying book of the same name won the Mind Book of the Year 2011.
Her new touring show, Mad Gyms & Kitchens, was commissioned as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and will conclude its 2011-12 UK tour at the Southbank Centre as part of London 2012 Festival. An edited version of the Diary Drawings exhibition will also be on show in the Royal Festival Hall during the festival, from 31st August – 9th September.
Bobby Baker is Artistic Director of Daily Life Ltd, part of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio of revenue-funded organisations. In 2011 Bobby was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Queen Mary, University of London. In June 2012 she was awarded the first PSi ‘Artist Scholar Activist’ award for outstanding achievement within the cross-disciplinary field of performance.
