Amira Kheir on Scoring Sumurun
Italian-Sudanese singer/songwriter Amira Kheir presented a brand new live rescore of Ernst Lubitsch's brilliant 1920 adventure Sumurun (also known as One Arabian Night) at Watershed.
Kheir's fusion of Western jazz and folk with traditional Sudanese music presented a perfect counterpoint to Lubitsch's ornate film, which was originally scored using only piano.
Amira Kheir has performed for audiences around the world with a sound inspired by traditional music from her homeland Sudan and anchored in jazz and soul. She has performed at festivals like the London Jazz Festival and the Festival Au Desert in Mali, and on air in BBC 3′s World on 3, BBC World Service Network Africa, BBC Arabic and BBC Persia.
This event was presented in association with Birds Eye View and was part of Filmic 2013 - Watershed and St George's annual three month exploration and celebration of the creative connections across film and music.
