BAFTA Presents: A Brief Encounter with Andy Serkis
Andy Serkis is a critically acclaimed British actor, director and author who is best known for his performance of Gollum in hugely successful The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. He has acted in over 60 film and television productions, including Peter Jackson’s King Kong (the fourth-highest grossing movie in Universal Pictures' history), Mike Leigh’s Topsy Turvy and Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People. His portrayal of proto-punk legend Ian Dury in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll earned him an Evening Standard British Film Awards 2010 Best Actor award, and a BAFTA nomination, and his chilling portrayal of Ian Brady in Longford resulted in a BAFTA TV Award nomination for Best Actor, and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Series, Miniseries or Television Film.
With over twenty years of experience in the film, television and theatre industries, Andy is well respected for his vast body of work, but it is his work with motion capture technology in films such as The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and King Kong that has had the greatest impact on his career. Motion Capture (also known as ‘performance capture’ or ‘mo-cap’) is technology that enables the movements and expressions of an actor to be recorded and translated into a computer-generated image, and is increasingly used in films, computer games, and television.
This engaging event, recorded as part of Encounters International Film Festival 2010, sees Andy discussing his plans to open ‘The Imaginarium’, Europe’s first studio dedicated to developing the art and craft of digital characterisation in film, video games, advertisements and live performing arts.
