Heather Brooke
Heather Brooke is an American journalist and campaigner who gained notoriety for helping to expose the 2009 United Kingdom parliamentary expenses scandal. She has since gone on to participate in the WikiLeaks diplomatic cables leak, and has written a number of books which focus on democracy, notions of authority, and the freedom of information.
In this talk, Heather Brooke answers audience questions and discusses her book, The Revolution Will Be Digitised (2011), which explores how technology can be used to empower citizens by providing an easy means of disseminating information. She also explores the idea that the internet can be used as a agent of democracy, emphasising the continued importance of the press in digging through information to hold the establishment to account and empower individuals with knowledge.
Heather Brooke is a visiting professor at City University's Department of Journalism in London, and has written a number of books, including Your Right to Know (2006), The Silent State (2010), and The Revolution Will Be Digitised (2011).
