Luna Director's Q&A
Renowned artist and filmmaker Dave McKean (MirrorMask), best known for his collaborations with author Neil Gaiman, joined us at Watershed to answer questions about Luna, his newest release.
The film sees Grant (Ben Daniels) and Christina (Dervla Kirwan) attempt to reconnect with their old art school friend Dean (Michael Maloney) and his new partner, following the painful loss of their child which saw them retreat from the world under a shroud of grief. Now, as the couples come together for a weekend away in Grant's isolated seaside house, they must all confront old wounds and try to forge new pathways to friendship.
The project was inspired by McKean's close college friend's story from 21 years ago, and it's taken years for the Director to bring this sensitive and profound story to life in film. Expertly blending live action and gorgeously wrought animation, the film embodies the dreamlike reverie of what it's like to grieve, to remember, and to come to terms with the past.
Luna has been 7 years in the making and in this talk McKean offers a unique insight into his distinct creative process. Talking to Tom Abba from University of West of England, he reflects on the place of imagination and fantasy in film, and particularly within the British independent scene, describes writing the film's script and developing the soundtrack at his north Devon location, and explains his processes for getting constructive feedback.
