Mike Leigh
This fascinating evening with award-winning British film director and writer Mike Leigh, organised by Cineformation, took place at Watershed on Wed 9 April 2008. The event began with a masterclass (aimed at local filmmakers) followed by a preview of his film Happy-Go-Lucky.
Leigh established himself as a unique voice with such groundbreaking television dramas in the 1970s as Abigail’s Party and Nuts in May. He moved into feature films with High Hopes (1988) and powerful dramas such as Naked (1991). Since then films including Secrets and Lies (1996) and Vera Drake (2004) have established Leigh as a major international director and one of the leading filmmakers of his generation.
The masterclass, in true Mike Leigh improvisational fashion, was delivered in the shape of a Q&A where the audience was the interviewer. The film critic and Time Out contributor Nigel Floyd introduced Mike Leigh.
Gain an insight into the way that this talented director works as he shares valuable tips and advice with the audience including his approaches to collaborative working, casting, planning, digital technologies and his own background and influences.
