Contact with alien life has gone horribly wrong, and large parts of South America are dangerously infested. It falls to young photojournalist Andrew (Scoot McNairy) to track down and save his bosses’ daughter, Samantha (Whitney Able), and get her out alive.

Monsters is a super low-budget sci-fi film written, produced and directed by Edwards, who set out to make the world’s most realistic monster movie. With a five person crew and a two person cast, he shot on location in Central America jumping in and out of a van to shoot scenes off the cuff – he even did all the film’s special effects by himself on his home computer. It’s drawn inevitable comparisons to District 9 and is completely original, refreshing filmmaking.

In this post-screening discussion with questions from the audience Gareth Edwards talks about how the film came about, his background as a special effects artist and the realities of making a low budget film with a very small team.

The discussion is hosted by Chris Moll from South West Screen. The event was presented by BAFTA and iFeatures, South West Screen's low budget feature film initiative, in association with Fresh Flix, a month long programme of events inspiring young creative talent presented by Encounters International Film Festival and Watershed.
