NFTS Presents: Cinematography Masterclass
Cinematography is an art form unique to motion pictures, which involves the lighting and camera choices that are integral to the ‘look’ of a film. A cinematographer, then, is the person chiefly responsible for the achieving this, working closely with the director to ensure that their vision of the story is realised. Cinematographers are also referred to as Director of Photography (or DPs), and makes similar creative and interpretive decisions to a photographer. However, unlike photography, which deals with still, single images, motion pictures require a more complex array of choices. Also, a cinematographer’s role involves personnel management and logistical organisation.
In this talk, award-winning cinematographers Stuart Harris and Brian Tufano show a selection of their work, discussing their early years, different career paths, and the way technology has changed their work. The talk was introduced by Nik Powell, director of The National School of Film and Television, and Stuart and Brian were interviewed by broadcaster Briggy Smale.
