Sean Bobbitt on Cinematography
"The world of documentaries is the same as news, it’s just a much longer form. So you have more time to explore a subject and look at it closely. To visually craft elements of the storytelling is what interested me. It was that artistic part as well as the intellectual part of being able to delve more deeply, and then use that information to inform the visual elements."
Sean Bobbitt, from an interview with Katie Griffiths, 2012
Sean Bobbitt began his career as a news cameraman in the early 1980s. In 2008, he shot Director Steve McQueen's debut Hunger, which won, amongst other awards, the prestigious Camera d'Or at Cannes. Sean also won a BIFA Technical Achievement Award for his work. Sean collaborated again with McQueen on Shame and 12 Years A Slave, and has worked on Neil Jordan's Byzantium and Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond The Pines.
In this BAFTA Crew masterclass, Sean discusses his creative process and career in the camera department, exploring his work on award-winning collaborations with directors across genres and mediums.
This event was funded by Creative Skillset's Craft and Technical Skills Academy and in partnership with Creative England, as part of BAFTA Crew.
