BAFTA Presents: The British Guide To Showing Off Q&A
Since 1972, eccentric British artist Andrew Logan has been hosting The Alternative Miss World, an anarchic non-competitive competition that celebrates freedom of expression in the most creative, outrageous way possible. From housewives to artists, designers, cult figures, outsiders, and celebrities (David Hockney judged the first event, David Bowie couldn't get into the second and Derek Jarman won the third), the competition attracts a bevy of unconventional beauties from far and wide.
The British Guide To Showing Off is a feature length film directed by Jes Benstock that follows the 2009 show, and combines documentary footage, animation, and interviews to chart the history of the event.
The film launched in November 2011, and was accompanied by special Dress Up Preview Screenings at the cinemas in London, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Sheffield, Bristol, Brighton, Cardiff and Liverpool.
In this talk, director Jes Benstock and a panel of people involved in the film discuss The British Guide To Showing Off, including the documentary-making process, and The Alternative Miss World competition.
