In June we collaborated with Cables & Cameras to deliver introductory workshops for 8 young creatives.
In our first session Gary Thompson showcased work created through Cables & Cameras and highlighted the importance of spaces and networks for creatives of colour. Claire Simmons, Talent Development Producer from Watershed & BFI Film Academy South West gave a tour of Watershed and a glimpse into what goes on to keep the organisation running, and the creative happenings within the cinema programming office and Pervasive Media studio.
Our second session was a very exciting camera workshop led by Arri, and arranged by MyWorld and the University of Bristol! You can read all about this here.
In session 3 we took over the cinema at Watershed to have a careers talk and masterclass by Director and Screenwriter Michael Jenkins. We were treated to a private screening of some of Michael’s films and heard all about the development of his filmmaking career, and how his identity and experiences inform his creative work. Michael then led us through a practical workshop where he encouraged the participants to consider how you could interpret a script cinematically through camera shots, directing actors, lighting and editing.
Session 4 was a packed-out signposting session to find out about other opportunities and meet people who encourage networking and professional development. Prince Taylor from Latent Pictures gave an inspiring talk about how his company is striving to redress the imbalance of talent from under-represented backgrounds in the creative industry; and Remi from Gritty Talent showed us what is on offer to support early career creatives. We also loved hearing about his own journey to his current role. Jane Coulter and Jenny Duffy from The Bottle Yard Studios gave us the lowdown about the Film & High End TV Workforce Development Programme as well as the amazing productions happening in the studios.
Everyone came away with new creative ideas and more confidence to take part in talent development opportunities!
