Introducing the hosts of Film Club!

Four under-25s stood outside watershed

Aged 16-18 and looking for a space to share ideas, meet like-minded people your age, and most importantly – watch some really amazing films? Come to Film Club at Watershed!

Film Club is a safe space where different opinions are encouraged and a perfect opportunity to learn, laugh and share through the power of film.

Launched in March 2025, the next Film Club Meeting is on Wednesday 30th April, watching the 17:30 showing of Last Swim, followed by the meet up at 19:00 in Waterside 1 (snacks provided).

The four fantastic hosts are participants in a BFI Film Academy development opportunity to gain skills in Communication, Facilitation, and Programming. They are under 25 and passionate about creating an inclusive space for fellow film lovers from all backgrounds.

Hosts of the film club (four young people) and MyWorld fellow/Facilitator stood outside of Watershed
L-R Frazer, Jojo, Zakiyya, Leo, Megan

Jojo

My name is Jojo, I grew up in Bristol and have been working at Watershed in the Cafe Bar for almost 3 years throughout my film studies. I love film, I watch literally everything, but l’m a fan of the ones with swords or magic. Subtitles always on, either I can’t speak the language or my eating’s too loud. My Favourite film is High and Low by Akira Kurosawa.

I want to provide the chance to engage and talk about film in an environment that hasn’t always been available and that I wish I had growing up, as my interest in world cinema was developing.

Zakiyya

Hey, I’m Zakkiya. I’m 20 Years old from Bristol currently working for the ambulance service. I decided to become a film club host to share my passion for cinema. I am an alumni of BFI Film Academy Short Course. My favourite film is Civil War directed by Alex Garland.

Leo

Hi I’m Leo, I’m a student comedian/performer here at Bristol with an arguably intense love for film. I don’t think I would’ve fallen in love with film if it weren’t for the pandemic, so I’m excited to help create a space where other people can fall in love with it as well! My favourite film is The Doom Generation by Gregg Araki.

Megan

I’m Meg, a 22-year-old Film Studies undergraduate at UWE Bristol. I love horror films (especially if they are French, super gory and have sapphic themes) and my favourite of all time is Martyrs (2008)! I want to share my love of films with other young people who feel like “outsiders” and to gain experience for my future career in the film industry!”

Helping to coordinate the team is MyWorld fellow and producer Frazer Meakin:

Being part of this brilliant opportunity for young film lovers in Bristol makes me so excited. I have seen the hunger for a space where 16–18 year olds can connect, watch, and be inspired by their love of film—and now it’s here.

Watershed prides itself on inclusivity, and this is the place where post-16 film enthusiasts can feel seen, heard, and part of something bigger. If you know someone into film—make sure you tell them because this is exciting!”
