Film screening with Q&A followed by a masterclass aimed at 16-24 year olds dedicated to celebrating action filmmaking, with a focus on women in action film and British talent.

This event is hosted by BFI Film Academy South West as part of the BFI’s Art of Action season.

10am: Join us for a screening of Polite Society, followed by an in-person conversation and audience Q&A with the director Nida Manzoor.

1pm: Masterclass: Creating Action Sequences with British female stunt artists Jo Rolison and Ayesha Hussain. Jo and Ayesha shall talk about their careers and show some tricks and tips for how low budget young filmmakers can get more action into their work – more of the excitement less of the injury!

Polite Society (UK, Cert 12A)

Polite Society throws, spins and punches the genre etiquette book out the window to deliver an action-packed comedy that is at once original, goofy and quirky – a story of true female empowerment with an extra ka-pow!

Nida Manzoor is a BAFTA-winning British filmmaker who wrote, directed, and created the series WE ARE LADY PARTS. POLITE SOCIETY is her debut feature, produced by Working Title and Focus Features. The film premiered at Sundance 2023 and is being re-released as part of BFI’s Art of Action season across the country.

Jo Rolison is a talented British-Filipino action and stunt performer known for her impressive work in both television and film. With a background in martial arts and physical performance, Jo has made a significant impact in the industry. Her film credits include the action comedy Lift with Kevin Hart and Sam Worthingtonpsychological crime thriller Luther: The Fallen Sun with Idris Elba and Back in Action with Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx. Jo also collaborated on the Taylor Swift: I Can See You music video. Jo’s dedication to her craft have earned her recognition as a rising talent. 

Ayesha Hussain is a British Asian Multi-disciplined athlete, stuntwoman, and weapons specialist. She has featured in countless TV and Film productions, notably Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), The Acolyte (2024) and Polite Society (2023).

BFI Film Academy Scene events are peer-to-peer interviews and networking events, which give young filmmakers opportunities to offer tips about storytelling, filmmaking and breaking into the industry, as well as meet other young screen creatives and potential collaborators for future projects.
