This workshop is part of Beyond Boundaries, a rolling fund aimed at supporting people and organisations based in the South West that are currently under-represented in the cinema sector to:

• Originate, develop and deliver ambitious cinema events and experiences
• Shine a light on different and diverse cinematic stories
• Come up with fresh approaches to attracting new audiences for cultural cinema beyond the mainstream.

This first workshop will introduce the creative elements of film curation and programming, helping you to develop and define your curatorial vision and to consider who your audiences is and how to reach them.

On top of that, you will learn about the practical elements of researching film titles, such as clearing rights for screenings, putting together an event and marketing it.

It will also be an opportunity to meet with other film curators and programmers and make connections within the exhibition sector.

During this day-long interactive workshop, we will watch The Passion of Remembrance at Cinema Rediscovered, discuss films and hear from guest curators and film collectives who will share their experience, as well as asking you to think about the kind of films you want to screen and why.

Speakers will include:

KAREN ALEXANDER, an independent film curator, writer and freelance consultant. Karen has contributed articles to Sight & Sound and Vertigo, organised a wide range of screenings for festivals, conferences and exhibitions on her key areas of interest – representation, gender, identity and independent cinema. From 1998-2006 she worked at the BFI on their Distribution and Archive releases.

COME THE REVOLUTION, a collective of curators, programmers and creatives from Bristol & Birmingham committed to exploring and challenging black life, experience and cultural expression through cinema.

THE FINAL GIRLS, a London-based film collective focused on exploring feminist themes in horror cinema and highlighting the representation and work of women in horror, both in front of and behind the camera.

No previous experience of film programming or curation is necessary but we do ask you to come prepared to share your ideas for film screenings with the group.

Refreshments and vegan lunch will be provided for participants. Bursaries are available to support travel and accommodation costs to attend the workshop.
