Bristol Archives looks after records of Bristol and surrounding areas, as well as archives in the British Empire & Commonwealth Collection. Both collections include substantial film archives.
The Bristol films document many aspects of city life, from civic occasions to local industry, from 1902 onwards. The British Empire & Commonwealth archive, one of the largest amateur film collections relating to the empire, covers the 1920s to 1970s, across many different countries.
We’re gradually cataloguing and digitising these films and we make all digitised versions available in our public searchroom. We occasionally organise or contribute to screening events to share these films and we welcome opportunities to work in partnership to reach wider audiences.
