Cinema Curator at Watershed and Chair of the Film Hub South West, Mark Cosgrove feeds back on the cinema’s programming challenges and successes of the last week.
This weekend was definitely one of our quietest of the year: the alchemy of sun and England match leading to a disappearing audience. New opening doc Whitney suffered most with mediocre reviews adding to its woes. Leave No Trace in its second weekend maintained a respectable audience, but still lower than it deserves given the overwhelming positive response to the film. Meanwhile The Happy Prince also ticks along in its 3rd week.
What is doing great is the Queer Vision partnership, which delivered a strong showing for the preview of the much anticipated The Miseducation of Cameron Post, opening late august.
There is little doubt that the indie exhibition world is suffering a case of summer shine and football blues.
