{"id":5622,"date":"2021-07-13T12:48:38","date_gmt":"2021-07-13T11:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/watershed.co.uk\/filmhub\/?p=5622"},"modified":"2021-07-16T09:03:38","modified_gmt":"2021-07-16T08:03:38","slug":"meet-the-critics-cine-redis-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watershed.co.uk\/filmhub\/news\/meet-the-critics-cine-redis-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the Cinema Rediscovered 2021 Film Critics Workshop participants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With just two weeks to go until the 5th edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watershed.co.uk\/cinema-rediscovered-2021\">Cinema Rediscovered<\/a> (28 July&nbsp;\u2013 1 Aug 2021) kicks off, the festival announces the eleven participants selected for this year&#8217;s Film Critics\u2019 Workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This opportunity is designed to support aspiring and early career film critics to develop their practice, meet other critics, and learn from those working in the industry. This is the inaugural online edition of the Film Critics\u2019 Workshop and will be running from July \u2013 Sept 2021. She grew up in Cambridge, studied Sociology at Warwick, and now works for a creative writing charity in London. She has always spent an inordinate amount of time at the cinema \u2013 especially when she worked at the BFI and got free tickets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angela is particularly interested in old Hollywood and other repertory cinema, but she loves films from all eras and countries. She is drawn to charisma and stardom, conscious artificiality, melodrama, heightened emotions, camp, fashion and style, explorations of identity, music and dance, and cinema that engages all the senses (or seems to). In criticism, she is interested in historical context and re-evaluation, the stories and personalities behind the films, personal responses, and good writing. Passionate about researching and writing on film, Catherine has subsequently had film articles published in&nbsp;<em>Senses of Cinema.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Catherine&#8217;s debut piece focuses on Kelly Reichardt\u2019s \u2018unique temporal rhythms\u2019 in the \u2018anti-Hollywood\u2019,&nbsp;<em>Meeks&nbsp;Cutoff&nbsp;<\/em>(2010).&nbsp; Her second article, featured in the \u2018World Poll\u2019 issue of&nbsp;<em>Senses<\/em>,&nbsp;pays tribute to #fridayfilmclub.&nbsp; This virtual club was set up by the independent filmmaker, Carol Morley \u2013 via Twitter \u2013 to bring film lovers together during the first lockdown.&nbsp; Catherine writes on the films of other women filmmakers such as Clio Barnard, Lucrecia Martel, and Andrea Arnold.&nbsp;&nbsp;Whilst many people are struggling financially due to the pandemic, Catherine regularly recommends&nbsp;and writes on&nbsp;films that are free to stream via her social media.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:37% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/watershed.co.uk\/filmhub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Charlotte_Geater.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5646 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><strong>Charlotte&nbsp;Geater<\/strong>&nbsp;is originally from Suffolk but lives in Walthamstow, and is a freelance writer and poetry editor. Her poetry has been published in The White Review and Strange Horizons. She won the 2021 UEA New Forms Award for a novel in progress which blends the forms of fiction and essay; it partly focuses on films about rural Suffolk.
