Announcing Experimental Audio Camp residential

Posted on Wed 8 Feb 2023

We are super excited to launch our Experimental Audio Camp as part of MyWorld. Apply now to spend three-days in residence at Real World Studios deeply embedded in creative sound production, working collectively to create an original audio work.

We are offering 10 experienced audio designers/composers/sound artists - who may be working in visual media, film, theatre, live performance, location-based media, VR, the metaverse or similar - a fully funded place on this exciting residential.

With advances in technologies, music and creative content production we are keen to explore new methods of original music creation, recording & production that provide a new and exciting experience for delivery over spatial audio formats and allow for different modes of engagement and presentation.

“Audio plays a critical role in creating an immersive experience in formats such as virtual reality, augmented reality, 360-degree videos and of course film. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to see what potential spatial audio has for the future of music production and hence for all of these other media formats. We are looking forward to bringing together a cohort of audio practitioners and supporting this experimentation. What better place to experiment with this than the West of England, home to Real World Studios and a huge network of a diverse range of audio practitioners. This is a perfect storm.”

Vanessa Bellaar Spruijt, Watershed Producer

The Experimental Audio Camp borrows its format from the Real World Producer Camp, where musicians and producers spend three days/nights writing and recording together to produce a finished piece of music to be released. They are paired up and supported through a process of making and sharing sessions, with group meals and access to facilities from 10.00 - 22.00.

‘The Experimental Audio Camp is aimed at combining the successful Producer Camp programme with our wish to push the boundaries of 3D audio. The essence of the camp is creative collaboration, bringing creative mindsets together to produce a work in sound, most likely music based, that explores the sensory world of immersive audio with absolutely no preconceived ideas: a sonic blank canvas.”

Mike Large and Tim Oliver, Real World Studios

It will be a chance for participants to take risks with their practice, meet new people, try out new formats, new and old technologies, to listen and learn from those around them in a unique atmosphere away from distractions. Throughout the process they will be supported by Real World engineers, session musicians, external specialists and a team of producers from Watershed and Bath Spa University’s freshly launched Immersive Audio Network.
