Bristol has had a love affair with the humble bike for many years. To celebrate the many pleasures to be found on this most enduring of machines Watershed is proud to welcome back Cyclescreen, Bristol's Bike Film Festival, from Thu 18 - Sun 21 Aug.
Following on from its hugely successful first year, this year's 4 day line up includes films, talks and events with topics wheeling from the Tour de France, to mountain biking to fixed gear riding, to cyclocross, and lots more.
Highlights include a rare screening of Jorgen Leth's A Sunday In Hell (Sun 21 Aug, 15:00), the seminal film about the Paris-Roubaix race that is widely regarded as the most powerful portrayal of cycle racing ever made. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Leth hosted by William Fotheringham, the Guardian's cycling correspondent, who will also be talking at his own event about cycling trivia.
Why is it that a certain breed of cyclists choose to ride bikes with no gears in our glorious hill-filled city? Come and find out why Bristol has such a passionate fixed gear cycling scene at the free outdoor premiere of local filmmaker Gavin Strange's documentary BÖIKZMÖIND in Millennium Square on Sat 20 Aug at 20:00.
We'll be expecting lots of the cyclists featured in BÖIKZMÖIND to be at Watershed's Café/Bar on Friday night when we will host the stationary bike racing competition Rollapaluza! Racers will be accompanied by live DJs as they sweat it out for some ace bike goodies and the glory of being crowned the Cyclescreen champion.
Tommy Curtis, who founded Cyclescreen along with fellow Watershed Front of House staffer Benjie Croce, said:
The bike holds a special place in the hearts of Bristol's ever-growing cycling community and we're looking forward to another year of film and fun on two wheels.
