Salad Days at Watershed
Posted on Tue 25 July 2023
If the temperatures rise over the summer months, we will switch our food offer to salads so that our team members working in the kitchen can stay cool.
With temperatures rising, and last year being the UK’s hottest year on record, we have been looking carefully at how our listed building works in extreme weather conditions, and in particular during heatwaves.
During the hot temperatures of last summer, we had to close the kitchen and food service for the wellbeing of our staff. This is obviously not an ideal solution for either Watershed or our customers. As the chance of the UK seeing 40°C days is predicted to be 10 times more likely in the current climate than in the past, we have been looking for other hot weather solutions.
From Tue 1 Aug we will be implementing the following menu changes in our Café & Bar during very hot weather:
Hot weather - limited menu of some light bites and salads. This means that we won’t have to use our fryers and grill which produce the most heat in our kitchen.
Extreme hot weather / heatwave – cold food and salads only. This means that we won’t have to use use fryers, grill, or the oven in our kitchen.
Our delicious new summer salads include;
- Coronation Chickpea Salad,
- Vegan Caesar Salad,
- Bombay Potato Salad,
Plus regular side dishes such as; Corn Chips and Hummus and tasty bread will also be available.
If the temperature rises, we will announce whether it’s going to be a Salad Day at Watershed on our social channels if you would like to check before you come.
These are steps we are taking as a result of climate change - as an organisation we are absolutely dedicated to tackling the climate emergency. We are committed to minimising the environmental impact of our activities, sustainability is a strategic priority, and we have committed to net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030.
Beyond reducing our emissions, we recognise arts and culture have a significant role to play in addressing climate change – and we want to be part of that change. You can find out more about our Climate Action Plan. Please also consider helping us in this work by donating to Watershed.
Thank you so much for your understanding.
