La Rumbera: Ninón Sevilla

Cinema Rediscovered 2024

Season

Please note : this season finished in July 2024

A trio of brand-new restorations starring Cuban-born actor, singer and dancer Ninón Sevilla (Emelia Pérez Castellanos, 1929-2015), a Latin American icon and exponent of African, Caribbean, and Cuban dance styles, called by Variety “a cross between Rita Hayworth and Carmen Miranda”.

The selected films combine elements of film-noir, rumbera and cabaretera genres during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.

These three new 4K restorations were produced by Permanencia Voluntaria and presented by Film Noir UK and Lorena Pino as part of Other Ways of Seeing, supported by BFI awarding funds from National Lottery.
