Louis Daniel Armstrong, aka "Satchmo", "Satch", and "Pops", was undoubtedly one the most influential figures in jazz, an American trumpeter and vocalist with a career that spanned five decades and different eras in the history of jazz, who is perhaps less known for his onscreen work, some of which you will be able to experience back on the big screen at Cinema Rediscovered.

You can expect lots of anecdotes about his on set experience and insights into his connection with the Newport Jazz Festival (captured so brilliantly in Bert Stern’s iconic documentary and now newly restored Jazz on a Summer's Day 1959 screening earlier in the day 14:30 at Watershed) and Leo Penn’s A Man Called Adam (1966) newly restored c/o STUDIOCANAL which is closing the festival on Sun 1 Aug 18:00 at Watershed. Speaking to today as much as to the Civil Rights era when they were filmed in the way they are filmed from the perspective of the Black musicians who played in integrated bands to integrated audiences while navigating a world that accepted them as entertainers but not always as human beings.
