John Hurt stars alongside Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft as a misunderstood man in David Lynch's classic set in Victorian England.

Surgeon Frederick Treves (Hopkins) finds a man (Hurt) with a physical deformity that means he is condemned by society to a life of degradation in a circus side-show. He is John Merrick, known to circus audiences throughout the country as 'The Elephant Man'.

Although Merrick cannot be cured, Treves battles to rescue him from the squalor of his surroundings and give him a life of dignity and comfort.

A true story of humanity and bravery, this is an atmospheric and unbearably moving tour-de-force from Lynch that was his first commercial and critical success..
