Billy Wilder's Oscar®-winning comedy traces the compromises of a lowly New York insurance drone who lets his superiors use his apartment for their illicit affairs.

C. C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) knows the way to success in business... it's through the front door of his apartment (by giving them a key to use for their extramarital flings). Among them is his callous boss, who Baxter learns is using his place to romance the lovely Fran (Shirley MacLaine), a elevator girl who C.C has admired from afar. When Fran is dumped, however, he must decided whether to save the woman of his dreams... but possibly lose his job.

With exquisite production design and shimmering black-and-white photography, the film has a subversive edge in its cynical view of the self-deception, loneliness and cruelty involved in 'romantic' liaisons and corporate America. Wilder felt this was his finest film - although he would never go much further than to say "it worked".
