A young housekeepers quiet, ordered life falls into ruins after spending the night with an alleged terrorist in this profoundly political story set against a climate of fear and paranoia.
When Katharina Blum falls for a handsome man at a party, unbeknownst to her, he is a criminal on the run from the police. The night she spends with this alleged terrorist is enough to send her quiet life into turmoil and subject her to police surveillance. Exploited by cheap newspaper sensationalism, Katharina slowly becomes a wider target, with anonymous phonecalls and letters, sexual advances and threats all testing the limits of her dignity and sanity.
One of the key films of the New German Cinema movement,Margarethe von Trotta’s (co-directed with her then-husband Volker Schlöndorff) powerful yet sensitive adaptation of Heinrich Böll’s controversial novel is a stinging commentary on state power, individual freedom and media manipulation.
