British writer and director Sharon Walia’s fiercely committed documentary about migration profiles those attempting to enter Europe to escape atrocity and the everyday people who volunteer who help them.

Filmed over a one year period all over Europe and off the Tripoli coast, The Movement highlights the brutal conditions faced by refugees as they attempt to navigate global smuggling networks. Faced with a Europe shutting its borders and seemingly ignoring the refugee issue, it shines a light on the NGO’s dedicated to refugee relief and some of the everyday heroes - feisty, smart and articulate young volunteers and grassroots activists - who give up their time to step in and help people fleeing persecution.

Made with the tiniest of budgets yet crafted with a fierce commitment to truth-telling and a burning sense of ambition to help those refugees who have suffered appalling abuse, Walia’s film demonstrates there is hope to be found in seeing others willing to sacrifice their time, comfort and mental ease to help in this growing movement.
