Celebrating Slocombe

Cinema Rediscovered 2016

Season

Please note : this season finished in July 2016

To say that Cinematographer Douglas Slocombe (1913-2016) had a varied film career would be a huge understatement. Even from early on in his career Slocombe’s adventures behind the camera would become the stuff of legends, so much so that an entire page of Sight & Sound in 1940 was dedicated to his encounter with Joseph Goebbels during a Nazi rally on the eve of the Second World War; an encounter from which Dougie narrowly escaped with his life!

A nod to this face to face meeting could well have been the inspiration for Indiana Jones’ very own chance encounter with Adolf Hitler at a pre-war Nazi rally in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Slocombe’s final film. It is fitting that these two dramatic scenes, one from Dougie’s real life and the other from one of his films, bookend an incredible film career that lasted 40 years and included 80 films.

This special Cinema Rediscovered retrospective will show the range of Slocombe's work. It's incredible to think that we are celebrating the man who not only filmed the elegant scenes between Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn in The Lion in Winter (1968) (a film in which Slocombe should have received an Oscar® nomination at least) and then finding his name behind the energetic but blood curdling action sequences found in Rollerball (1975).

From The Lavender Hill Mob running down the Eiffel Tower to Mini Coopers racing above and below the streets of Turin in The Italian Job, from Tommy Swann being chased in the streets of London in It Always Rains on Sunday to Indiana Jones being chased by basically everything in the original Indiana Jones Trilogy we have seen all of this, through the eyes of one man... Douglas Slocombe.
