Weimar Sundays

Season

Please note : this season finished in Oct 2019

2019 marks 100 years since the establishment of the Weimar Republic, an unstable and unsettling time in German history. A time set between the turmoil of both the First World War and the Second World War where economic uncertainty and collapse of authority brought about waves of revolutionary chaos that would end with the rise of the Nazis.

However, the era of the Weimar Republic also brought about the first key film movement in the history of cinema and the most influential film industry outside of America. The films which make up this special season of Weimar Sunday silent film screenings showcase some of the lesser known titles produced during the era but highlights the incredible visual diversity of the German industry at the time. From dystopian cities, Alpine adventures and depraved nightclubs Weimar Sundays has something for everyone.

This Sunday Brunch season is a collaboration between South West Silents, Bristol Festival of Ideas, Cube Cinema, Curzon Cinema and Arts and Watershed celebrating the films of the Weimar Republic as well as the ‘City and Silent Film’. These two seasons run through September, October and November 2019 as part of the Festival of the Future City 2019. Festival of the Future City has a day on Bauhaus on Tue 17 Oct.
