Written and directed by Junji Sakamoto (Tekken, Face), Another World is an intimate portrait of a trio of men whose reunion brings back complex memories which make them reconsider their passive existence.
Steeped in a small town in rural Mie Prefecture, Japan, two local men - Koh, who inherits his father’s charcoal business, and Eisuke, who now runs his father’s old car dealership, are unexpectedly reunited with a third childhood friend when he returns from the Self-Defence Forces with PTSD, causing Koh to take a deeper look at the relationships in his life.
Through this local, close-up lens, Sakamoto creates a wonderful - at times funny but with darker undertones - presentation of why the lives of people in small-town communities are no less significant than those of the wider world.
An affirming and beautiful ‘big picture’ view of the human experience and how relationships evolve and endure over time, Junji Sakamoto’s delicately performed drama received the Audience Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
