Deaf Conversations About Cinema Online: Sound of Metal

Live stream

Please note: This event took place in June 2021

Watershed's monthly film discussion event for Deaf and hearing audience members is back. Please join us online at 19:00 on Tue 1 June for a discussion of Sound of Metal where we will come together on Zoom to share thoughts and questions.

Hosted by Deaf artist, performer and filmmaker David Ellington with special guest Ti Singh, BFI FAN Campaigns Manager (MCA), this online event will feature BSL interpretation throughout. All welcome - the conversation will be open to Deaf and hearing audiences!

Riz Ahmed is outstanding in Sound of Metal, the debut from Darius Mader (co-writer of The Place Beyond The Pines) about a heavy metal drummer who, after losing his hearing, is forced to re-evaluate his place in the world.

Ex-addict Ruben (Ahmed, nominated for an Oscar® for his performance) is a drummer in a metal duo with his girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke), the pair constantly on tour living in their beat-up RV, playing loud, frenzied, and passionate music. Ruben starts to suffer from a severe ringing in his ears, which quickly gives way to deafness, throwing his life into turmoil. If he can't recover his hearing, who will he become? In a group home for Deaf addicts, Ruben must choose between his new Deaf community and fighting to hold on to what has always defined him...

Marder uses innovative and experimental sound design to create powerful soundscapes that intimately give a real sense of Ruben's sonic journey and disorientation as he adjusts to life with less sound. Moving to its own unique beat, Sound of Metal is a poignant portrait of a man finding his way to a new revelation...

Sound of Metal will screen at Watershed from Wed 19 to Thu 27 May (all screenings of Sound of Metal will have Descriptive Subtitles and Audio Description) and it's also available to watch online on Amazon Prime, so make sure you watch the film in advance and then tune in on Tue 1 June at 19:00 for the discussion - we can't wait to see you all. Book your free space in advance for Deaf Conversations About Cinema Online as spaces are limited.
