Talk: Why Black Horror Matters Now
Please note: This event took place in Sept 2021
To celebrate the release of Candyman (opening Fri 27 Aug), Adam Murray from Bristol Black Horror Club joins us for an illustrated talk on the history of Black representation in horror films and behind the camera. Adam will look at the history of the genre and its recent resurgence, in films like Get Out and Candyman, and in directors such as Jordan Peele.
His talk will explore themes of horror as allegory, satire and folktale and how the genre is a catalyst for visualising trauma and struggle, offering catharsis and healing whilst also championing the other, the outsider, the misunderstood, the unseen and the voiceless in transgressive and progressive ways.
After the talk Adam will be in conversation with Watershed Cinema Curator Mark Cosgrove and will take questions from the audience.
