Independent Miss Craigie

Jill Craigie was one of the first women to direct documentaries in the UK. Working during the time of the British Documentary Movement in the 1940s-50s, her films such as To Be Woman and Out of Chaos gave light to subjects such as equal pay and artists at work in British film for the very first time.
Although a handful of other women managed to work in the creative sector with some support from the Movement, Craigie’s films stand out because of their overtly feminist and socialist politics, their attempt to juggle activism and entertainment, and a degree of critical recognition on their release.
Using footage from Craigie's own films, never-before-seen documents and photographs, Lizzie Thynne's documentary reveals the pioneering director's struggle to get her radical films made and distributed.
