PoliNations – the idea

part of Lunchtime Talks

Talk + Live stream

Please note: This event took place in April 2022

In this talk, design director Carl Robertshaw will be discussing PoliNations, an epic multi-artform project created in response to the toppling of Colston’s statue, greening cities, and gardening. This is an extra-ordinary visual arts installation, performance, light and sound experience, involving mass participation, local voices, big ideas, nature, spectacle, and space to reflect and celebrate diversity.

Stemming from the simple fact that around 80% of plants found in UK-city gardens originated overseas, PoliNations will launch in Edinburgh and then take over Victoria Square in Birmingham this summer.

PoliNations will be in Victoria Square, Birmingham from Fri 2 – Sun 18 Sept. Find out more about the project and how to get involved here.

Carl Robertshaw is a transdisciplinary designer and artist with over 25 years of experience working at the intersection of performance, engineering and fine art.Working alongside Bristol based-arts organisation and Studio alumni Trigger,Carl was instrumental in developing The Hatchling - potentially the world's largest non-mechanical flying puppet, which will be leading the procession for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant this June.

From 10:00 - 17:00 you can stay at the Studio for Open Studio Fridays - join us to continue the conversation or work on your own projects. The Studio provides chairs, tables, wireless and a great space. You bring what you need to work with (laptop/mobile). Tell us what you’re up to, or allow us to facilitate conversations within the resident community. Studio staff and residents will be around to chat, answer questions, or tell you more about what we do. The open afternoons close at 17:00, sometimes with a trip to the Café & Bar.

The Lunchtime Talks take place in the Pervasive Media Studio, which is in the Watershed building. The Studio is just beyond the Café & Bar, turn right and then go down the corridor to your left (where the toilets are). The double doors here will be open, go all the way down until you reach the Studio. A member of staff will sign you in, and check your ticket, if you have booked.
