Encounters Presents: Inna Wi Carnival: Reflections of a Generation
CTBApart of Black History Month 2022
Please note: This was screened in Oct 2022
To celebrate the start of Black History Month Encounters Film Festival have partnered with St Paul's Carnival to present a screening of new documentary Inna Wi Carnival.
In 1968, what we know today as St Pauls Carnival, the annual event celebrating Afro Caribbean culture, sprung to life – brought into existence by a Caribbean community who travelled to the UK and settled in Bristol, bringing with them their vibrant culture, deep-rooted traditions and an open-armed resistance towards racial hostility.
As Carnival progresses and adapts to reflect societal changes, it’s important that its roots aren’t forgotten. It’s through documenting the stories of our forebears that St Paul's Carnival aim to preserve traditions of Caribbean Carnival for future generations.
It’s the stories we tell that will shape our future. This short documentary joins a conversation between local elders, who recollect their memories of St Pauls Carnival and all that the celebrations mean and entail.
