Ostensibly a biopic of the last queen of France, Sofia Coppola’s punk portrait of the titular monarch explores its subject with an ironic twist, satirising the ceremony and pomp of the French court.
Thanks to its brilliantly anachronistic and New Wave-heavy soundtrack, the film is loaded with a modern energy and style and features an eclectic cast, including Coppola’s cousin Jason Schwartzman as Louis XVI, and Marianne Faithfull as an Austrian Empress.
Shot on location in the Palace of Versailles and propelled by an enigmatic central performance from Kirsten Dunst, Marie Antoinette offers a playful picture of opulence and excess.
