Jacques Demy’s tribute to the Hollywood musical remains one of the most romantic films ever.

Catherine Deneuve plays Geneviève, a teenage girl working in her mother’s umbrella shop. The government drafts her lover, Guy, to fight in Algeria. Pining for Guy's return, she attracts the eye of a quiet young jeweller Roland Cassard. Her mother persuades her that Roland is a more eligible suitor.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg achieved the perfect fusion of camera movement, décor and song. The film became a major influence for directors Damien Chazelle and Wes Anderson.
