In this re-teaming of the star and director of A Royal Affair, Mads Mikkelsen displays his mettle as a former soldier trying to tame Jutland in 18th-century Denmark.

In 1755, the impoverished Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mikkelsen) set out to conquer the uninhabitable Danish heath in the name of the King. But the sole ruler of the area, the merciless Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), believes the land belongs to him.

De Schinkel swears revenge when a couple who have fled his clutches seeks refuge with Kahlen. As the group of misfits begins to build a small community in this inhospitable place, the confrontation between Kahlen and De Schinkel promises to be violent and intense.

A gripping drama about the pursuit of wealth and honour, The Promised Land has been hailed as "the kind of ravishing, rousing epic we don't really get much of anymore" (Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine).
