Paul and Mary Bland are your typical, middle-class, American couple. One works at an off-sale liquor store, the other a nurse at the local hospital, jointly saving toward their dream of opening a country-style restaurant.
Their economic twin bed existence is comfortably ordinary, until Paul loses his job. Suddenly their dreams hang in the balance.
One night, a drunken swinger mistakenly enters their apartment and attacks Mary. Paul – with an iconic weapon of choice – leaps to her aid, killing the man in the process. Reckoning no one will miss him, the couple dispose of the body and pocket the money in his wallet. Thus, a devious plot is hatched to finance their quaint ambition.
Played to perfection by lifelong friends Paul Bartel (who also directs) and Mary Woronov, Eating Raoul is a richly dark comedy levelled at consumerist culture.
